The Lake
Lake Tahoe exists over two states - 2/3 of the lake is in California with the remaining 1/3 of the lake in Nevada. The lake itself is huge, the largest Alpine lake on the North American Continent. Running a length of 22 miles, it is five times as deep as the Statue of Liberty is tall. It has been estimated that there are around 40 trillion gallons of water in the lake making it one of the biggest in the world and one of the most popular when it comes to outdoor activities. On the California shore you will find hotels catering to skiing and snowboarding and other lake activities like fishing and boating, while the Nevada shore offers all the fun, lights and excitement of Las Vegas with casinos and hotels. Whether you decide to stay on the California shore or the Nevada shore there are many cheap hotels to choose from. Whenever visiting a new city the local chamber of commerce can be of assistance with information on where to stay, where to eat, and how to get around. There is more than one airport to fly into when traveling to Lake Tahoe. The Lake Tahoe Airport is on the California side of the lake and the Reno-Tahoe International Airport is on the Nevada side of the lake.
Skiing & Snowboarding
The first thing many think of when Lake Tahoe is brought to mind is the great skiing and snowboarding that can be done there during the winter months. Lake Tahoe averages around 125 inches of snow a year at the lake level and 400 inches of snow a year at skiing elevations. There are more than 8,800 acres of ski resort land with around 182 different ski trails to choose from. One of the trails, the longest in the area, is 5.5 miles long. The biggest vertical drop is 3,600 feet. You can find the longest run and the biggest vertical drop at Heavenly Mountain Resort. There are about 7 different ski resorts to choose from in Lake Tahoe, another good one being Northstar. If you want to try snowboarding or skiing for the first time there are many stores that cater to renting equipment and gear. Whether you’re a first time slope runner or a seasoned ski bunny your trip to the slopes doesn't have to be a blind date. There are cams all over Lake Tahoe so you can see the snow for yourself.
Outdoor Activities
Lake Tahoe is an outdoor playground. Even during the winter when there is snow covering the ground the lake never freezes. The lake is a great place for fishing, boating, and swimming, and the shore of the lake is a great place for running or cycling, or any other outdoor activity. Jeep and Hummer tours take you into the backcountry of Lake Tahoe. There is an annual Lake Tahoe Marathon that allows you the chance to encompass all these different activities into one weekend. If you’re not that active but still want a little fresh air, go to Lake Tahoe during their annual Shakespeare Festival. This is an outdoor theatrical performance on the shores of the lake allowing you to relax lakeside with a picnic while enjoying the entertainment of the festival.
